The local cabin developer had a dream: a truly special addition to their portfolio for a floating micro-cabin. They contacted Feste Landscape /Architecture to realize that dream. Upshot: for extreme Nisser Lake planning rules in Telemark, Norway, they had to change course. The first version of the cabin was therefore built on stilts along the shore rather than floating above the water. With this prototype mounted to the ground, there are still hopes for ultimately creating a floating version.

Cozy and Smart Interior

In recent years, larger, luxury holiday homes have been trending among the Norwegian market. This micro cabin provides a delightful contrast, showing that great aesthetics and living comfort can exist in smaller packages. In short, what matters is a strong connection to nature rather than sheer size.

Apart from one or two cozy places to sit, the most dominant feature of the cabin is an extensive glass wall separating the kitchen/living area from the covered terrace. The choice offers a sense of lightness and creates a welcoming environment flooded with natural illumination and charming views of the lake and surrounding landscape. One always feels nature’s embrace while cooking, lounging, or enjoying terrace activities.

The overall dimensions may only be 26 square meters, but compactness means smart use of space. The ingenious incorporation of a mezzanine loft enables the cabin’s accommodation of sleeping arrangements for up to seven guests. Every nook is let out intelligently without compromise on the functionality, though it gives more of a spacious impression. The layout makes sure that you can have a crowd without compromising comfort and charm.

Electricity, water supply, and sewage are all introduced from a flexible pipe beneath the structure. The set-up is quite adaptable; so when the floating one comes up, it can use more or less the same set of installations without much alteration.

Natural and Minimalist Exterior

The cabin is clad in thermally treated pine on the outside, causing it to appear refined yet natural. Warm undertones allow the wood to merge seamlessly with its surroundings, whereby the structure looks as if it belongs to the landscape rather than an artificial addition to it. The design is beautifully simple yet quite expressive, marrying the modern with traditional Nordic accents.

The seamless integration of gutters and downpipes within the wall ensures the exterior remains clean and uncluttered. This considerate detail signifying the minimalist appearance of the cabin promises that no matter from which angle you glance, the structure will look refined and elegant.

Yet another concept is the structure being up on stilts; floating will respect the same principles with an intention to provide a sanctuary on the water. Whether perched right upon the shore or floating somewhere on the lake, the cabin then shows how small can still provide a good-sized experience.
